Our office is proud to offer metal-free fillings, for the most attractive smile at the safest level possible!
We promote the latest in composite "tooth colored" fillings instead of the old amalgam "silver" fillings used in the past. The reason for this is, while metal fillings are commonly referred to as silver fillings, these fillings are in fact composed of close to 50 percent mercury, with less than 40 percent silver in them. While mercury amalgams were first used in dentistry because they were cheap, easy to use and durable, opponents of amalgam argue that long-term exposure to even low levels of mercury cause a number of health problems.
Luckily, modern technology has created another option that allows fillings to be placed with composite resins - materials that are tinted to blend in with your natural tooth color. Additionally, these composite resins are now stronger than ever! They bond to the tooth which supports its structure, thereby preventing further breakdown.
Please note that some dental insurance plans may not fully cover the cost of composite fillings. Your plan administrator will be able to tell you whether composite resin restorations are covered on your plan. If your plan "downgrades" your filling to an amalgam filling, there may be an additional charge from our office for the difference. Nevertheless, we believe that the extra costs are well worth it for you, as composite fillings:
- Are less invasive
- Are safer, and more stable than mercury amalgam
- Provide a tighter seal
- Do not weaken teeth because they don't expand with heat the way metal does
- Restore teeth to their original strength and beauty
